Let’s Get Virtual!

Let’s Get Virtual!

Okay so apart from the words of a similarly named pop song jumping into my head as I penned this title you need to seriously think about this as you take a look at the world around you. Everything is moving from physical to digital even if you take a simple look at the typical work desk of today compared to the desk of our parent’s generation.

We moved from writing to typing, from tools such as a calculator for figures and achieve boxes storing paperwork to an app on our phone and Dropbox on our computers. Books were replaced with Amazon’s kindle, Newspapers with Twitter feeds, Dictionaries with Google and Printers with pdfs. Our calendars moved from the wall to our phones as our business cards moved from a rolodex to LinkedIn. Our notes became blogs, our landline skype, picture frames Instagram and our wallet Paypal. All this has happened in the last 30 years alone so imagine what kind of a world our kids will be living in by the time they are old enough to give us grandkids?

Love it or hate it there is no denying the fact that what may have once been a very physical world is now a very digital one where our smart phone screen protectors need replacing before the phone contract ends due to the run marks on them as our keyboards need replacing before our computers are out of warranty as we can no longer read the letters on them – or maybe that’s just me…

Here’s the thing when it comes to business you have to be smart, you have to be savvy as not keeping up with the jones is not just not an option as if you do something after everyone else has already done it you may as well close up shop now. The only way to be innovative and stand out from your competitors in a now very global and therefore extremely competitive market place is to do what everyone else will be doing before they do.

This is no mean feet with VA’s replacing PA’s to help people work round the clock at a fraction of the price, outsourcing tasks they used to do themselves and automating wherever possible anything that used to be manually but then we risk getting so caught up in the virtual world that we miss out on the physical.

Enter the world of work life balance where people don’t really know what they want they just know it isn’t what they have now as the grass is always greener on the other side. They automate their income streams so they can spend more time with their families only to go crazy at home with the kids when they realise they don’t want to be a stay-at-home mum but love being a full time entrepreneur.

The conclusions I reach from all these recent and every increasing number of changes are as follows:

  1. If you are not yet virtual you must become so as any task you physically do instead of outsourcing is wasting your time just as any manual task unautomated is wasting your money
  2. Whether you want more time with your family or more time to do the things you love you can only achieve both by moving every part of your team and systems to a virtual equivalent every chance you get
  3. You should have done this yesterday as you must always be a step-ahead of your competition so they have no chance of stealing your business but better yet you accidentally get theirs without them even noticing

So how do you do this I hear you ask and the good news is I am about to share this with you. Diana has asked me to be a regular contributor to this blog series so hereon in you will get a different tip on the range of different methods I suggest you use and/or the variety of tasks that can be both outsourced and automated over the space of 2016. I hope you look forward to reading them as much as I look forward to sharing them with you.
